This rule applies to both men and women. There’s an unwritten rule between smokers about hanging around alleys and streets: strangers aren’t total strangers. They talk as if they are close friends even though they don’t know each other’s names.
We were told from childhood never to talk to strangers. However, a 2020 study showed that being isolated from our peers increases the risk of dying prematurely. Of course, this doesn’t mean talking to everyone but being civil enough to engage in friendly conversations.
